My friend and I were debating this tonight and I couldn't find the answer anywhere. Is there a penalty for falling off the obstacles and into the water? The reason I am asking is, when the 1,000 gallons of water is released and the contestant is sent flying back down the "hill", it is generally near the 5 minute mark when they re-exit the water, meaning that nearly 3:30-4:00 have gone by. This seems like an unreasonable amount of time to me. Similar amounts of time pass when the contestants "wipeout" on other obstacles...even if they are only 20 feet away from their start point. So basically, is there a time penalty for wiping out?

No. On any obstacle in the Zone there is NO time penalty for wiping out but you can skip the Gears Of Doom if they are too hard for you

So where does all the time go? I refuse to believe it takes 3+ minutes to swim less than 100 feet and pull yourself on a platform....what happens?

It's called editing my friend. They all have a certain time when finished. If you saw all the footage for every contestant in the Wipeout Zone, it would almost take up the whole show. When watching, just know that the time isn't exactly at the same point the contestant is in the course... if that makes sense.
